At our final event of the year, forestry program participants received certificates to celebrate their accomplishments, including special recognition awards for those who attended each of the five educational workshops throughout the year. We’re looking forward to the third forestry cohort in 2026!

Fruit Tree Propagation

Mayagüez, Puerto Rico
In the second iteration of this workshop, instructor Carlos Díaz Palmer demonstrated how to propagate citrus and avocado trees. Each participant took home their own newly grafted tree at the end of the workshop!

Bats: Importance and Habitat Creation

Manatí, Puerto Rico
Bats are essential pollinators in Puerto Rico and beyond. At this workshop, participants learned about the vital roles bats play in ecosystems and how to create habitat for them. The hands-on portion of the workshop provided participants with the opportunity to build bat boxes.

Ecotourism

Corozal, Puerto Rico
Ecotourism provides farmers and forest landowners with an environmentally sustainable way to generate income. This workshop included discussion about how ecotourism can benefit forestry program participants and local ecosystems.

Agroforestry at Finca Gaia

Dorado, Puerto Rico
This workshop kicked off the second year of Asekia’s forestry workshops! During a visit to Finca Gaia, located in Puerto Rico’s unique northern karst area, participants toured the farm’s forest – including a visit to a karst cave – with fellow forestry program participant Manuel Baez and his family.
