We are honored to receive funding that will enable us to expand our work with Hispanic forest landowners into distinct geographic areas, growing our capacity to empower landowners through the Hispanic Forest Landowners Outreach Program.
This multi-year award from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service, which we are receiving as part of our partnership with the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities, will fund our work to elevate Hispanic forest landowners in areas throughout the United States and its territories for the next three years. Through this effort, we will build on our work with 50 forest landowners in Puerto Rico while we expand to the diverse Hispanic and Latino communities in northern New Mexico and Florida, tailoring our programming to the unique characteristics of each of these areas.
As part of this work, we aim to implement initiatives that will reduce the risk of wildfires—an area of concern for participants in our pilot project in Puerto Rico—promote reforestation and sustainable forest management strategies, and connect landowners to emerging markets. Our focus on creating opportunities for face-to-face engagement with landowners will be key to our efforts.
“As we work to protect our natural resources and preserve private forestland, we're not just planting trees; we're sowing the seeds of generational stewardship. Through initiatives like this, we're forging a legacy of environmental guardianship and economic empowerment for Hispanic and minority communities,” said Dr. Nolo Martínez, mano-Y-ola Co-President. “Together, we're ensuring that our forests remain a source of pride, prosperity, and promise for future generations.”
